(North Bend, OR) — All four passengers and the pilot involved in Monday’s incident at Southwest Oregon Regional Airport (OTH) have been released from the hospital, according to a hospital spokeswoman. The five were inside the plane that was landing at the airport when it skidded off the runway and became partially submerged in the Coos Bay Estuary. The individual, who was held for overnight observation at Bay Area Hospital, was released Tuesday.

Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) officials were on site Tuesday to conduct a preliminary investigation. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will continue its investigation to determine the cause of the crash. Until it is complete, the aircraft remains stored at the airport.

The Southwest Oregon Regional Airport resumed commercial air service shortly after the incident, which occurred in the early morning hours of Monday, April 7. A 2019 Honda HA-420 jet skidded off the east end of Runway 05/23.

The incident was reported to emergency dispatchers at approximately 6:12 a.m. through an alert. The aircraft was arriving at the airport after leaving St. George Regional Airport (SGU) in Utah, according to flight tracking service Flight Aware.

All five occupants were transported by ambulance to Bay Area Hospital (BAH). Upon arrival, hospital staff confirmed that all individuals were alert and oriented. The hospital initially reported that all sustained minor injuries and were stable. Three were released that day, one remained at BAH for observation, and another had been transferred to another facility for specialized care. All have now been released.

The HondaJet was removed from the water Monday after coordination between the airport, the aircraft owner, and a crane operator working nearby on the rail bridge and trestle. The NTSB authorized the recovery, and the swift response enabled the airport’s main runway to reopen quickly.

SkyWest Airlines, operating United Express flights between North Bend and San Francisco, initially canceled its Monday afternoon arrival and departure, but reinstated service with only a one-hour delay. General aviation operations for smaller aircraft were unaffected, as Runway 13/31 remained open throughout the response.

The Southwest Oregon Regional Airport is one of seven Category 1 airports in the State of Oregon serving both commercial and general aviation air traffic. It is the only one located on the Oregon coast.
