Volunteers made a noticeable dent in removing invasive plants from Airport Heights Park setting the stage for additional invasive species control on Coos County Airport District property. The collaborative effort was led by  Oregon's Bay Area Beautification (OBAB), the City of North Bend, the Coos Watershed Association, Rotary, and NW Natural earlier this month. 48 volunteers turned out to remove  Scotch Broom, Holly, and English Ivy from a 55-hundred-square-foot area in the park during the second Saturday clean up.

This is the third cleanup to remove the invasive Scotch and French Broom in the park. As an invasive, the plant is known to choke out native grasses, plants, and shrubbery. The most recent removal took place in the park between the playground and baseball fields on February 8th. CCAD has also removed more mature plants on the bluff above the aircraft ramp and taxiways. The partnership for this removal included the city that has received grant funding to create defensible spaces to reduce wildfire risks.

The CCAD Board will consider approval of an agreement with Coos Watershed for additional invasive species control at its next board meeting on February 27, 2025. The meeting will take place at 7:30 am in the Southwest Oregon Regional Airport Terminal boardroom.
